Water in my Walls

So, it has been awhile since I wrote anything particularly substantive about my personal life, and what's going on with it.  There's a good reason for that: back in August, my house decided to see what it would be like to become a water pipeline.   One evening, during the same storm that practically washed away Ellicott City's main street, I came down to the kitchen to see water dripping rather rapidly from the ceiling and window casing.  I went into the basement and found water coming...

Wilson’s Handy-Dandy Guide to Finding A Place To Live

So, I've had several friends in the last few years come to me for help finding apartments.  I never really realized until recently how hard this task is for some people, and how little most people actually know about the process.  Since I can't help everyone myself, and because many folks seem to need just a small nudge in the right direction, I've decided to put together a short guide to finding a place for you and your stuff.  I hope you guys find it...

Periodically I post a small collection of iPhone photos that I feel depict the reality of my life at that particular moment in time.  Here's what my life looks like right now, as seen through some of the photos I've taken in the last two weeks or so.  As you can see, mostly boats and work, but a few excursions within Baltimore.  I post most of these on Facebook, but I try to also put them up here periodically.  I enjoy the social aspect of...

You can stop the ride now, I’d like to get off.

It has been an eventful few weeks, and I'm beginning to feel like I'm on a treadmill that people keep throwing obstacles onto - I'm not really going anywhere, but I sure am getting tired and stressed out.   After spending a week in Breckenridge with my family, immediately upon my return, Rose returned from China.  I spent the next couple weeks getting her settled in, getting the house a little more unpacked (the day before I left for Colorado, I moved out of my old house, and...

I recognize that this is horribly belated, but here's what my life was like back in May!  Basically, boats, cats, house renovations, more cats, more boats, and some occasional socializing thrown in for good measure.   I did originally gather these together in May, so I have no idea why they didn't get posted in a more timely fashion.   [gallery type="rectangular" link="file" ids="52804,52805,52806,52807,52808,52809,52810,52811,52812,52813,52814,52815,52816,52817,52818,52819,52820,52821,52822,52823,52824,52825,52826,52827,52828,52829"]...

The Trouble with “Simple” Solutions

I recently spent the better part of a day showing around two people from Twitter who were in town to check out Baltimore, as they were considering moving here.  Since I do my best to try and help bring in new people to the city, I figured I'd show them around some of the areas they were interested in, as well as some that I thought would also be a good fit.  Both of them were very involved in the activist community, and very interested...

How Poverty is Zapping my Brainpower

There have been quite a few articles recently written about how studies show that being in a state of poverty does terrible things to your mental health.  It's all fine and dandy to read about people who have been reduced down to a statistic, a set of numbers that you can post to Facebook and say "Isn't this sad?" and then go about your day.  Unless you're one of the people in that statistic.  Then it becomes reading about your life, and how much of...

Where To Go From Here?

I'm in an odd place in my life right now.   This winter, I finally got top surgery and recovered from it, so that's done.  This spring I bought a house and solved my housing situation for the next several years, so that's done too.  I went back to work on the Potomac boats again temporarily, because with closing on the house and recovering from surgery, I hadn't had much time or energy to job hunt over the winter, but it's definitely temporary, as I'm now at...

An Afternoon at the Annapolis Cup

A few weeks ago I was lucky to be invited to attend the annual croquet game between St. Johns College and the US Naval Academy, often called the Annapolis Cup.  It's a lighthearted affair, with everyone in attendance dressing up either in vintage finery or the most outlandishly preppy thing they can find (informally, the preps are generally in support of the Naval Academy, and the dandies are for St. Johns).   It was a lot of fun, and as I remarked to more than one person,...
